The Weltzustandsmaschine (World State Machine) visualises the condition of the Earth and offers the possibility to track changes in real time. On a glowing globe, it displays data such as environmental strain and pollution in different locations around the world, as well as armed conflicts that destroy people's livelihoods.
The project takes up the idea of the “World Game” by Buckminster Fuller, who believed that people would treat their planet better if they could see the consequences of their actions.

The World State Machine
Particularly impressive is the visualisation of real-time databases showing migration rates, storms, wildfires, earthquakes, and the state of the world's oceans. Visitors can operate the surface of the globe via touch panels, gaining detailed insights.
The project was created in collaboration between André Heller, the California-based company ESRI, and the Austrian Institute for Sustainability, and was developed and realised by BILDWERK and Media Apparat. The Weltzustandsmaschine was built as part of the “Zeiträume” exhibition in the vaults of Burg Taggenbrunn in St. Veit, where it can be explored by visitors. The project was also exhibited at the Austrian World Summit in 2022 and 2023, and won 3rd place in the “Use of Technology” category at the 2022 Bea World Awards.
